Day Hike in the Nature Area near Castricum (NL) / 15 km
01 May 2022

The Dune Reserve of Castricum, close to Amsterdam, is one of the largest nature areas in the Netherlands.  Here we can immerse ourselves in the beautiful forest, sandy dunes with marram grass, small dune lake and heather vegetation. The dunes host various species of birds, butterflies, rabbits and squirrels. With some luck we might even encounter some highlander cows and wild horses.

THE WALK:
Leave at home the stress from the week, switch off your phone and come with me to explore this beautiful Dutch hidden gem.

These dunes are very special. They protect the Netherlands from flooding and they make some of the purest drinking water in the world.

We will take our time to visit this beautiful area.

The hike is around 15 km and we will walk through the forest, the open dune landscape and reach the coast. We will enjoy a beautiful view of the beach and then we will walk back to our starting point. During the walk, I will tell you about the local flora and fauna which inhabit this region. We will talk also about dune dynamics and the management of the Dutch coastal landscape.

You don’t have to be particularly fit for this excursion, but please mind that we will walk for several hours throughout the day.
